BUSD Announces In-Person Instruction Four Days Per Week

 

SAN DIMAS COMMUNITY POST | MAY 2021 

 

Superintendent Carl Coles announced that all students are invited to return to their respective schools four days a week – an increase from the current two days a week hybrid model. This change will eliminate the hybrid A and B groups – where participating families were allowed to attend class in person on Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Grounded by warmth and goodwill, San Dimas High School art teacher E. Dominic Black enthusiastically spoke about his work for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Although Black’s pursuits demonstrate his personal success, they reveal more so his character as an authentic educator.

A Bonita Unified School District board member’s anti-mask stance won’t stand. After several days of online debate over Krista Chakmak’s social media posts, the BUSD Board of Education held a Special Meeting on Feb. 16 and unanimously voted to affirm compliance with all COVID-19 health and safety mandates.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva joined newly appointed San Dimas Station Captain Walid Ashrafnia and city officials at a virtual town hall on Tuesday, Feb. 2 to discuss public safety concerns with residents. Villanueva and Ashrafnia addressed county-wide law enforcement budget cuts, community relations efforts, diversity within the department and COVID-19.

​As puffs of smoke smother three stacks of hive boxes, the roar of hundreds of honeybees begins to grow. But what appears to be chaotic distress in actuality is the complete opposite. Combining eucalyptus leaves and pieces of burlap coffee bags, beekeeper Joaquin Munoz hand fans smoke into the hive to awaken the honeybees and to let them know he is opening the hive boxes.

Reluctant to answer, I nod my head. Quickly, he introduces himself as Oscar De Leon, farmers market manager.

STUDENTS RALLY FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Jon Sweat, senior adjunct instructor, discussed the importance of love and respect as he revealed that he has three types of cancer: polycythemia, skin cancer and leukemia. Despite being plagued by this disease, Sweat spoke at Relay For Life of Claremont and La Verne at Campus West in a light-hearted tone, encouraging his audience Saturday night to stay positive in the face of adversity.

POWELL SPEAKS OUT ON RACISM, SEXISM

Activist and author Kevin Powell discussed his commitment to justice and equality for all at the Frederick Douglass Humanitarian Lecture Monday in Morgan Auditorium. Powell brought up the recent Oscars controversy, praising host Chris Rock for shining a light on the lack of diversity in Hollywood.

Latin dance music fostered a positive, lively vibe Saturday at the Arcadia Gold Line station opening of the new stretch of Metro rail, bringing needed relief to traffic congestion throughout Los Angeles County to San Gabriel Valley residents. The Gold Line Foothill extension stretches east from Pasadena through cities of Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and Azusa.
